Some kinds of mental illness are incurable and only get worse.  
Delusional paranoia for one.  Multiple personality disorder for 
another.

I imagine that at some time in the future, we'll find Mark on a 
street-corner in Baltimore, talking to himself about how he should 
have been the one to get that Nobel Prize instead of that Japanese 
guy if only Shimadzu hadn't so unfairly fired him well over a decade 
ago.
